Offline dictation without internet on Android: how it actually works

Not every app promising voice input works without a network. Here's how to switch on real offline dictation - and why this is about more than just being out of range.

Why «supports your language» isn't the same as «works offline»

Plenty of voice input services advertise support for dozens of languages - but that doesn't mean recognition happens on the phone itself. Some of them send the audio to a server for processing, and without a stable connection they either fail to start or return nothing. For Ukrainian and Russian this is especially noticeable: these languages are less often a priority for offline models than English.

How to enable offline recognition on Android

On Android, offline speech recognition is a one-time setup in the system settings:

  • 1 Open Phone settings → Language and input.
  • 2 Go to Voice input → Google.
  • 3 Find Offline speech recognition and download the pack for your language.
  • 4 Once it's downloaded, dictation keeps working on a plane or anywhere without coverage.

This is an Android system mechanism, and every app that relies on the device's offline speech recognition depends on it - Movlo included.

Why this matters beyond travelling

Offline dictation isn't only about losing signal on the road. It's also about where your recorded voice goes. When recognition happens on the device, the audio never has to travel to someone else's server and back. For notes that often hold personal or work information, that's a direct answer to «who else can hear this».

In Movlo, dictation in Ukrainian, Russian and English relies on that same Android offline language pack described above. The language switches with a single tap while recording, without going into settings. On choosing a dictation app in general, see in the general overview; for a comparison with «Voice Notebook», see in a separate article.
